Renegade Wines October 2020 Newsletter

Growing up in Fleurie, Yann Bertrand never thought he would become a winemaker. He briefly enrolled in commerce at a local university, and then travelled around the French Alps for a few years. When applying for local jobs, he noted that he was the son of a vigneron, and soon found himself working at wine bars and wine shops, surrounded by passionate wine geeks and artisan winemakers who often came to deliver wine themselves. Tasting wines in a new way, he began to ask himself some questions, and eventually decided that the metier of a winemaker would be interesting to him if he pursued it with the same passion as the role models he encountered.

These four wines just arrived at the doors of Renegade and we couldn't be more thrilled.

2018 Yann Bertrand Fleurie Vieilles Vignes $55
From 60+ year old vines grown on granitic sand. Organic farming. Carbonic maceration with native yeast and without SO2 and aged in 225-liter used barrels.
This pure and juicy wine is loaded with flavors of bing cherries, rose hips, violets, and cracked pepper. Light tannins, high acid, and a seriously refreshing finish – what more could you want? This stuff is the real deal.

2018 Yann Bertrand Fleurie Cuvee Emile $64
This is a cuvee that Yann finally made enough of in 2018 (first vintage was 2017) to ship a little to the US. It’s his TOP cuvee and sees a longer elevage so it’s the 2018 that is just now being released. It’s named after his son and comes from the absolute oldest vines that he cherry picks from the Grand Pre lieu dit. His idea is only to make a little bit of this and only in years he considers to be exceptional. Certified Organic. 100 % Gamay. Sourced from a 1-hectare lieu-dit, Grand Pré, on sandy granitic soils. The vine average 70-100 years old. 100% whole-cluster.
Outstanding after hours in the decanter.

2018 Yann Bertrand Beaujolais Oh!$40
Oh boy! This juicy Gamay from Yann Bertrand is one of our favorites to drink. Cherries, earth, and white pepper. This is so glugable. Fruit is carbonically macerated, aged for six months in concrete, and bottled in conjunction with the lunar calendar. ‘Oh!’ pays homage to Jules Chauvet and his pioneering of natural wine in Beaujolais.
-
2018 Yann Bertrand Julienas ...100% $48
This is everything you want it to be: it’s juicy, it’s fresh, and it’s seriously easy to drink. Notes of red currants, wild berries, crushed violets, and sweet spice dominate this nuanced and aromatic cuvée.
