Renegade Wines July 2020 Newsletter

We've put together an All-Star 5-pack of stellar Austrian wines for the upcoming weekend.
-
We begin with a wine made within the city limits of Vienna from the varietal Orangetraube. The winery Zahel is the only one to bottle a 100% Orangetraube in Europe (biodynamic to boot). And no, it's not orange wine (we made that mistake but as it turned out we're extremely happy with the mix up).
The wine has intense peach and apricot fruit, with spicy tones and elegant minerality.
-
We've featured wines from Nikolaihof for years and with good reason. They are sublime.
This Gruner Veltliner with the cute nickname 'Zwickl' is another bottle of biodynamic genius. It's unfiltered and unfined which results in a mildly exotic, somewhat intoxicating wine.
-
Josef “Pepi” Umathum is one of Austria's best known producers, a great champion of traditional Austrian grape varieties. This one, Zweigelt, is ruby red, spicy aromas with impressions of pepper and cherries, on the palate flavorings of cherries and raspberries with a fine, long and balanced finish. Classic, medium weight, clean, stellar Zweigelt.
-
Next from Rosi Schuster is his brilliant bottling of Rotburger. Why not call it Zweigelt when Rotburger is the same grape? Not sure. Nevertheless this wine is another in the line up of certified organic producers. Fermented with about one-third whole bunches this wine has an extra depth and structure. A bit darker berry fruit with hints of spice coupled with gentle tannins and a long finish. Wild boar anyone?
-
The final wine in the line-up is from Moric, one of the iconic producers in Austria.
The wine is a playful blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, and Pinot Noir. This is fresh with nice density lending itself perfect for sipping or something more serious like fillet of trout with forest mushrooms.
-
These five superstars are on-sale for $115 down from the usual $135.
Perfect for all your weekend wine needs.
-

and then there's this rare wine from Dagueneau:
2015 Les Jardins de Babylone from Juracon in the Southwest of France.
This is his DRY 100% Petit Manseng.
There are almost no words for this profound work of art.
$98
