Renegade Wines July 2020 Newsletter

When one dreams of the wines from Rioja the producer that comes to mind more often than not is Lopez de Heredia.
They produce distinct, complex, inviting, and incredibly long-lived wines. We've tasted bottles back to 1956 that were the equals of Grand Cru Red Burgundy. Their 1981 Tondonia Reserva Blanco, tasted three years ago, was profound.
The winery has a tradition of aging their wines for years in large neutral oak barrels, sometimes 10-15+ years.
So when you look at these three new arrivals and see the vintages - 2008, 2011, 2007 - realize that these are their current releases.
-
Here are the new arrivals from Lopez de Heredia:
-
2008 Vina Tondonia Blanco Reserva $65
-
2011 Vina Tondonia Vina Cubillo Crianza $30
-
2007 Vina Tondonia Reserva $60

2019 Domaine Lafond Rose 'Roc-Epine' (France, Southern Rhone, Tavel) $24
This appellation produces only one type of wine: Rose. This is a great introduction to the wines of the region. 60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 20% Syrah.
One of our favorite pairings recently was with Dim Sum!
The wine is dark in color but don't shy away from it. This one has lots of structure and depth. A nice spicy finish completes the experience.

2017 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Botanica (Oregon, Willamette Valley) $115
This 97 point winner is all about savory, earthy, spicy, exotic balance.
You may recall that winemaker Maggie Harrison began her days at Sine Qua Non before moving up to Oregon. She is incredibly gifted and this wine reflects her tremendous dedication.

2018 Pierre Cotton Cote de Brouilly 100% Cotton
(France, Burgundy, Beaujolais) $40
Motorcycle mechanic turned vigneron Pierre Cotton is a straight-up badass. We love his organic, unsulfured, and unfiltered 100% Cotton wine. Acid for days and tart fruit-forwardness. Serve chilled, pop at happy hour, and quickly become everyone's favorite host.

2016 La Croix de Carbonnieux Blanc (France, Bordeaux, Graves) $32
Great structure and wonderful minerality come to mind after the first sip. It's exotic yet subtle. Lean hints of grapefruit the a rush of lush acidity. A worthy wine for Chateau Carbonnieux's second label.

2016 Patrick Jasmin Cote-Rotie La Giroflarie (France, Northern Rhone) $68.50
Syrah (and what gorgeous Syrah) co-fermented with 5-ish% Viognier. The end result is a very sophisticated wine. Meaty, smoky, savory and very elegant. “Power without weight” or “iron fist in a velvet glove” are great analogies for this wine. Give it 2+ hours in the decanter then enjoy the heck out of it!

2018 Le Vieux Donjon (France, Southern Rhone, Chateauneuf-du-Pape) $64
If you asked us we might say this is our favorite Chateauneuf producer. Maybe it's because of their simplicity: One red, one white, and that's it. Perhaps it's because of their track record: every vintage we've tasted has been sensational. Do we factor in the label? Perhaps. The price? Sure. While other wines from the region are absolute terrific too their prices have topped $150, $200, $250 while Vieux Donjon has stayed the course: great wines (two) at a very fair price.
This bottle: dark fruit with nice clarity and concentration, and a hint of nicoise on the finish. There's the Mediterranean spice with hints of warm earth and a saline savouriness in the finish.
