Ameztoi
is a historic family estate in Getaria, a small fishing
village on Spain’s North Atlantic coast in the D.O. Getariako
Txakolina (Basque region). Their vineyards are on steep slopes
overlooking the Cantabrian Sea which contributes to a savory
salty character in their wines.
Pictured are their three wines that just arrived for your
weekend enjoyment.
First we have their Rose, Hijo de Rubentis, a natural
lightly sparkling Rosé made from old vines of Hondarrabi
Beltza and Hondarrabi Zuri. Pronounced freshness,
crystalline acidity, a distinct saline minerality, pale (not
qute ripe) notes of red berry fruit and we swear there's
splash of heirloom watermelon. Well, maybe. Zippy finish and
we are already thinking about the next bottle (10.5%). $28
Next we have with their classic white made from the
indigenous Hondarrabi Zuri varietal. Slightly spritzy, racy
acidity, bone-dry, perfect for a hot Summer day, and also
10.5%. $28
Finally, and a new wine for us, is a RED Txakolina;
calling this one rare is an understatement. Exclusively
Hondarrabi Beltza, grown on traditional high trellises facing
the Cantabrian Sea, with vines planted around 1918.
We've nicknamed this wine the "low‑level claret"
(11%). Luminous color, brisk acidity, again slightly
sparkling.
Aromatically we have an array of red fruit (currant and
raspberry), darker berry (bosen, black), violet.
One can feel the freshness on the palate, the gentle
spritz, and racy acidity. Now darker fruits emerge side by
side with the red, and a playful nice pepper spice joins the
party. $32
This would be great with fritto misto, and charcuterie,
perhaps even a plate of calamares en su tinta
(squid in its ink).
