Renegade Wines

  Dinner with Schiopetto

Renegade is hosting one of Friuli's most outstanding winemakers at Olio e Limone
on Monday, March 9!

We are kicking off the Renegade Dinner Series with an Italian icon: Schiopetto!

We first discovered their wines in a tiny osteria on the back streets of Verona. The days' menu is still etched in our minds:
Fettuccine con Asparagi,
Speck e Funghi Porcini
and
Costata di Manzo
Al Ferri con Patate al Forno
The wine we began the long lunch with was Schiopetto's outstanding Friulano; a magical beginning to a weekend in Verona.

And now a brief history of the winery:

Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930 and grew up in the Fireman’s Hostelry which belonged to the family, experiencing in first person the life of a fireman and then that of a lorry driver. For years he accompanied and helped his father to select the wines for the Hostelry, eventually running it himself.

Guided only by his personal taste and his love for wine, in 1963 Mario started to dedicate his time to wine production and in 1965 brought out his first “Tocai”, thus giving birth to the era of modern white wine in Friuli and transforming the conception of Italian white wine.

Everything started in 1970 in the vineyards around the Archbishop’s Palace at Capriva, ceded in rent to Mario by the church; vineyards which Mario completely renovated, and which finally became his property in 1989.

Mario, fully aware that the real wealth and strength of the business, are the soil and the plants, transformed old unkempt terrain in vineyards cured in great detail, he worked hard to render his vineyards unique and he took advantage of the potential of the Terroir of “Ponca” ( typical Friuli terrain composed mainly of clay and limestone ).

Gradually his children, Maria Angela, Carlo and Giorgio joined him in running the business, carrying on his project with sensitivity and respect, with love of tradition and real passion.

Mario was an innovator, desiring to experiment and to improve himself, his wine and his business. The merit goes to Mario for the creation of the first Tocai and of the modern white wine from Friuli, but also for the introduction of new technology and revolutionary innovations fundamental to the work in the fields and the cellars, peremptory in the production of high-quality wines. Furthermore, Mario demonstrated that he was also an innovator in the field of promotion, distribution and commercialization of his wines.

In April 2014 the business passed into the hands of the Rotolo family who intend to maintain intact Mario’s mission and productive philosophy.

Alessandro Rotolo was born on September 1, 1994. His father had recently taken over the management of Volpe Pasini, an historical winery located in Friuli Venezia Giulia.  So from the beginning of his life, Alessandro has been in the vineyards, in the winery and in the cellar.

His first harvest was in 2006 at Volpe Pasini, one of the best of the last 20 years. Alessandro follows every step of production with special focus on the vineyards, always working toward freshness and structure of the final product.

In 2014, Alessandro and his father acquired Schiopetto, one of the most significant wineries of Friuli. Alessandro has always admired Mario Schiopetto, the pioneer of the Italian white wine, and studied his winemaking philosophy with their oenologist Dr. Lorenzo Landi, who continues to make these wines as Mario Schiopetto had done.

Alessandro thinks of his mission as “back to the future.” His goal is to make a better wine with each vintage without forgetting the history and the wine’s origins.

Needless to say this is going to be a very special evening with Alessandro.
We hope you can join us!
