Angry Birds?
Dangerous Pelicans?
What
we mean to say is wines from d'Angerville & Domaine du
Pelican have arrived at Renegade; two of the most esteemed
properties under the guiding force of Guillaume
d'Angerville.
Domaine
Marquis d'Angerville is a renowned Burgundian estate
with a rich history dating back to 1804. Located in Volnay,
it has established itself as one of the most prestigious
producers in the Côte de Beaune.
The
estate spans approximately 15 hectares, with 12 hectares
dedicated to Volnay, mostly Premier Crus. Their crown jewel
is the Clos des Ducs, a 2.15-hectare monopole with records
dating back to 1507. The domaine's vineyards are known for
their unique "Pinot d'Angerville" clones, which produce
small grapes with a high skin-to-juice ratio. The estate
converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2006; the wines today
are all about finesse and complexity with the ability to age
endlessly (nearly).
Domaine
du Pélican is a renowned winery located in the Arbois
appellation of France's Jura wine region. Founded in 2012 by
Guillaume d'Angerville, Pélican has quickly established
itself as one of Jura's leading producers. The winery's
creation was inspired by a blind tasting experience at a
Parisian restaurant, where d'Angerville mistook a 2005 Jura
Chardonnay for a Burgundy (oops).
Intrigued by the quality and character of Jura wines, he
spent five years searching for the perfect property before
establishing Domaine du Pélican.
Renegade
has a small selection of Guillaume's 2022 releases. Please
reach out if interested.
2022
Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er
Cru $150
"Ripe yet fresh aromas of poach plum,
black cherry, violet and a hint of cassis
complement the delicious, vibrant and
caressing medium-bodied flavors that exude
a subtle minerality that helps to add a
sense of lift to the noticeably firmer and
impressively long finale. This is
excellent with the aging potential to
match." Outstanding -Burghound
2022 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
Volnay 1er Cru Champans $235
"A restrained and intensely
floral-suffused nose is reticent to the
point of being brooding and only
grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark
berries and spice whiffs. The precise,
highly energetic and super-fine
middleweight flavors also exude evident
minerality on the moderately austere and
equally long finale. I almost always
prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to
their Champans but that could well change
in 2022 as this is outstanding." Sweet
Spot Outstanding -Burghound
2022 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets $198
"Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, anise
and plenty of spice nuances are trimmed in
just enough oak to notice. The suave,
palate coating and solidly concentrated
flavors possess a richer and more generous
mouthfeel where equally fine-grained
tannins shape the less mineral-driven but
slightly longer finish. In the context of
what is typical, this is a relatively
powerful Frémiets that is very much built
to repay extended keeping." Sweet Spot
Outstanding -Burghound
It's
very obvious Allen Meadows from Burghound
loves this producer. So do we!

2022 Domaine du Pélican Savagnin Ouillé $65
A wine that bursts with drive and energy. Vivid and
refreshing with a drive that's robust and engaging.
2022
Domaine du Pélican Chardonnay Arbois En Barbi $80
This
extremely special plot is so rich in limestone that it
actually looks white! This chalky and mineral-driven
Chardonnay oozes with flavors of ripe yellow fruit, chalk,
green apple, and toast. This small-production cuvée is a
must-have for lovers of Jura, Chardonnay, and all things
Marquis d'Angerville.
2022
Domaine du Pélican Chardonnay Arbois Grand Curoulet $80
Grand Curoulet is one of the best terroirs in Arbois. It is a
north-facing plot, located on the side of a hill overlooking
Arbois and the Saône plain. Grand Curoulet is known for being
the place where the first Arbois vines were planted.
The wine is full of ripe and clean fruit -citrus, flinty
orchard fruit- with streaks of marl-influenced minerality.
There's one doozy of a long crisp finish that we found
entirely pleasing.
