We
are thrilled to introduce you to the stellar 2022
wines from Samuel Billaud, the hardest working
vigneron in Chablis.
Why
have we assigned this title to him? Back in 2019
when Renegade visited his winery Samuel was
go-go-go; full of energy, always on the move,
talking, working, creating. He was in a years-long
process of uprooting, replanting, expanding,
investing, diversifying. After an afternoon with
him he escorted us to a beautiful restaurant in
the heart of Chablis; a very generous individual
who treated us to back vintages of his wines,
along with a bottle of Raveneau and Roumier.
Without
further adieu here are the five bottles of Chablis
that just arrived.
2022
Samuel Billaud Petit Chablis $40
Samuel's
Petit Chablis vines are located on a plateau
directly above Les Clos and range from 40-75 years
old. There are only around 4,000 bottles of the
2022 Petit Chablis which might seem little to
slake the thirst of Chablis lovers, but it's a lot
more than the previous vintage (one barrel).
Allen
Meadows (Burghound) is always over the moon with
Billaud's wines. Here's his taken on the Petit
Chablis:
"There is plenty of
classic Chablis typicity to the ripe yet cool and
fresh aromas of lemon-lime and iodine. The racy and
attractively textured flavors exude evident
minerality and particularly so on the focused,
linear and youthfully austere finale. This is also
very good for its level and worth considering." He
names this wine a 'Top Value'.
2022
Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
$95
Year
in and year out this is our favorite wine from the
estate. We adore the lean minerality, oyster
shell, sea foam aspects here. And the electric
presence from something so ethereal.
Here's
the Vinous take on this wine:
"The
2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from
two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau
and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The
strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of
damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The
palate has a penetrating entry with another killer
line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with
serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very
sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de
Tonnerre".
2022
Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Montmains $84
Neal
Martin called this wine "a real livewire", while
Burghound dubbed it OUTSTANDING. We love the kinetic
energy here paired with an almost intense salinity.
Another classic bottling.
2022
Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
$92
As this wine
opens up in the glass a tremor of the exotic begins
to emerge. Oyster shell / limestone minerality are
once again present but we see here more body, umph,
depth even at this young age. This will be a stunner
in a few more years.
2022
Samuel Billaud Chablis Grand Cru Les
Clos $195
And
then we come to the Cream of the Crop (not to be
confused with the eighteenth studio album released
by Diana Ross & the Supremes).
This
one's all about power right now; a show stopper.
It has concentration yet retains finesse. It's a
thrilling prospect when a glass of this elixir is
within reach. For now decant as there is some oak
evident, or better yet, let it sleep for a few
years before enjoying.
And
that's the today's line-up. For the Chablis
enthusiast we are offering a 4-Pack of the
first four wines: Petit Chablis, Montée de
Tonnerre, Montmains, and the Mont de Milieu,
at
a very favorable price:
$265
for these 4 bottles (reg $311).
if you'd like to add a bottle of the Le Clos, the
sale price on
the 5-pack is $440 (reg $506).
Sale
price good while wine is available.
