Les Mesnil Brut Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru 100% Chardonnay from the chalky soils of Le Mesnil in the Côte des Blancs. Importer selects the best lots from the village co-operative for this cuvee. Crisp and bright, this starts off yeasty and toasty, then moves to flavors of green apple, ripe citrus, cashew and freshly-baked bread. Fine mousse and a long, luxurious finish. The vineyard of Le Mesnil sur Oger has a truly excellent terroir, 100% of its vineyards are ranked as Grand Cru. The vineyard is situated at the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs, so called because of the omnipresence of the brilliant Chardonnay. The white wine made from this grape, with its white skin and flesh is a fitting reason for the Blanc de Blancs naming. The quality of the vineyards comes from the fact that they are east-facing. With vineyard topsoil over a base layer of chalk the vineyards have excellent hydric qualities thus allowing the chardonnay grape to reach their full potential. Paul Bara Brut Reserve Grand An exceptional value for fans of Bouzy Pinot Noir, Paul Bara’s Réserve Brut Champagne exemplifies the rich, powerful style for which this Grand Cru village is best known. In fact, Paul Bara himself wrote the history of Bouzy, and his tiny production is all top quality fruit. His daughter Chantal is making the wines now, and her deft winemaking style stays true to Paul’s vision. This release is 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, and shows bright berry fruit on the nose with a tight, racy core of acidity. This is a food-pairing dream, with enough body to stand up to heavier, less traditional choices and a brightness that keeps it light enough on its feet to be served as an aperitif. Stunning. Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blanc The current release of Dom Ruinart’s non-vintage Blanc de Blancs is from the base year of 2019. It was disgorged in November of 2022, after two and a half years aging sur latte and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter. The bouquet is bright and expressive, offering up scents of lemon, pear, a lovely base of chalky minerality, bread dough and a topnote of white lilies. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core, good soil undertow, elegant mousse and a long, well-balanced and impressively complex finish. This is drinking very nicely already, but seems likely to be even more tasty a year or two down the road, for those inclined to cellar non-vintage bubbly. Paul Bara Grand Rose Brut Grand Cru The NV Brut Rosé is another terrific entry-level offering from Paul Bara. Rich and expansive in feel, the Brut Rosé captures all of the natural exuberance of Bouzy. Kirsch, rose petal, mint, chalk and white pepper all open in the glass, but what impresses most about the Rosé is its impeccable balance. This is such a classy Champagne. The NV Brut Réserve is vibrant and tense right out of the gate. Although Pinot-dominated, the Brut Réserve really bristles with energy. Green pear, apple, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are finely delineated in a vivid NV Champagne to drink now and over the next few years. J. Lassalle Rose An exceptional value for fans of Bouzy Pinot Noir, Paul Bara’s Réserve Brut Champagne exemplifies the rich, powerful style for which this Grand Cru village is best known. In fact, Paul Bara himself wrote the history of Bouzy, and his tiny production (10,000 cases) is all top quality fruit. Stunning. Composed of approximately 70% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Meunier sourced from 16 hectares of vineyards in Chigny-Les-Roses that grow on clay and limestone soils with an average vine age of 50 years. The wine ages a minimum of 42 months on its lees prior to disgorgement. J lassalle rose Ruinart Brut Rose Effervescent in the figurative as much as the literal sense. Pure silk on entry thanks in part to brilliantly integrated acidity. It carries on with its fairly full frame, cream-splashed red berries, and layers in a racy streak of acidity. A satiny texture with a long, creamy finish. This blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir come together in a lasting essence of roses and wild strawberries, the wine’s fruit complexity amplified by the sensation of acidity. With some time in the glass, it develops deeper, complex, more exotic notes, leading to a long and lively finish. Medium to full-bodied, round and supple, it’s elegant with a fleshy core of fruit.
