As
the Olympics wind to a close
we thought we would award our own medals to some of
the top preforming wines at Renegade. Here are the
results.
2022
Viñedos Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros Blanco
(Spain, Vinos de Madrid) $20
We
begin with quite the wine. A gold winner in three
categories:
Best
Spanish White Under $25

Favorite Story
"The
name of the winery is Bernabeleva, which means the
path of the bear. This high elevation site
located outside of Madrid, was home to the Celts in
the past, with ancient bears carved from boulders to
mark the forests dedicated to the hunt goddess.
One of Jenna's absolute favorite wine logos, we see
the Goddess of the Hunt, riding a bear, raising a
glass of wine. It's a whole mood and we are here
for it, and the wine of course. In addition to
all this, the wine is certified organic and practicing
biodynamic. Hot days and cool nights result in
tons of flavor, maintaining nice minerality and a
lower alcohol at 12% ABV. Unfined, unfiltered,
unadulterated."
Gold
for Best Summer Rose
2023
Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rosé (France,
Provence, Cassis) $35
An all around winner
is this Grenache-based Rose that is refreshing,
savory, charming, and perfect with a plate of
seafood. Judges (customers) gave this one top marks,
hence the gold medal.
Ready,
Set, GOLD!
2022
Enric Soler Espenyalluchs
(Spain, Catalunya, Penedès) $78
Gold
medal winner in the
Grand Cru Burgundy Imitator category.
At a recent blind
White Burgundy tasting this 100% Xarello was snuck
into the line-up. It shocked our White Burgundy
experts. Echos of Corton-Charlemagne in a cool
vintage were heard. Participants were in awe as the
wine's origin was announced: SPAIN! Gold medal
indeed.
ABC
2022
Lieu Dit Chenin Blanc
(Santa Ynez Valley) $26.50
In the Anything
But Chardonnay category Gold Medal goes to
this Chenin Blanc. It's one of our most popular
local white wines; a winner with the warm weather,
fried chicken, a cool Mediterranean salad.
Racing
for Gold
2023
Luna Hart Wines Sauvignon Blanc Skin Fermented
Ballard Adobes Vineyard
(Los Olivos District) $36
For
our next category, Exotic Whites, this
Luna Hart wine stole the show. Full of sultry
spice, divine structure, and fruit notes from far
away places. This wine is so momentous we invented
a descriptor for it: "Sexy Texturality".
Come
From Behind
2022
Wilhelm Walch Pinot Noir Prendo
(Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige) $20
Quite the underdog
here: a twenty dollar Pinot Noir from vineyards
below the Dolomites. Come on! Not a chance. But once
this one turns it on watch out. This wine
outdistanced its competitors at half the price. Gold
Medal in the Underdog Category.
Gold
in Grenache
2022
Story of Soil Grenache
Stolpman Vineyard (Ballard Canyon) $48
In our Grenache
category this Story of Soil won gold. It outshined
others with its utmost complexity, robust elegance,
and the exploding finish. Bravo!
and
in our Over Delivers...
2019
Château Roquefort
(France, Bordeaux) $22
Perhaps
a surprise winner in the gold for Over
Delivering Reds. A 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet
Sauvignon that shines bright. Plenty of red
currants and black cherries with structure and
potential to age for years. But why wait? With a
gold medal under its belt this one won't last
long.
