We
think the wines of Alsace are
too
often overlooked. Perhaps by featuring these four
new releases from Domaine Weinbach we can begin to
throw a spotlight on a region that produces
world-class wines.
At the foot of the
majestic hill going by the name of Schlossberg,
surrounded by vines and roses, lies Domaine
Weinbach, named after the little stream which runs
through the property and planted with vines since
the 9th century. It was established as a winery in
1612 by Capuchin friars.
After
being sold as national property during the French
revolution, it was acquired by the Faller brothers
in 1898 who then left it to their son and nephew,
Théo. Since 2016, Catherine has lead the
estate winery with her sons, Eddy and Théo.
Since 2005, the entire 28 hectares has been farmed
according to biodynamics. While the older vintages
were undoubtably good, these last 19 years the
winemaking team has turned good into great.
And
now...the Fab Four:
2022
Domaine Weinbach Pinot Blanc $40
On
the palate this vibrant Pinot Blanc begins with
eloquent aromas of orchard fruits and white
blossoms. It is well-structured, crisp, and
perfectly balanced due to an interesting contrast
between the freshness of the acidity and the
ripeness of the fruit, ending on a firm and
persistent finish.
The wine is a
perfect match with Shepherd’s Pie, quiche, salad
dishes and other starters. Also wonderful with
Indian or Thai cuisine.
2022
Domaine Weinbach Sylvaner $40
We begin with aromas
of yellow apple, candied pear and lemon zest, white
blossom, with subtle mineral notes. The palate is
juicy with lovely acidity and good balance. This is
a very interesting, deep and vivid wine. Great
along side roasted oysters or Seared
Halibut With Anchovies, Capers And Garlic.
2022
Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Clos des Capucins
$50
This
light to medium-bodied Pinot Gris expresses a
perfect balance between ripeness and acidity.
There's peach and pear notes alongside other
orchard fruits, and a snappy acidity. A
long-lasting finish and a mouth-watering sensation
complete this gem.
As for pairing this
with food, chicken with morels is a great choice
along with veal parmesan, Risotto With Peas, and
actually the wine is fabulous with smoked
salmon.
2022
Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Les Treilles du
Loup
$46
Les
Treilles du Loup shows off the heights
Gewürztraminer can achieve. Highly expressive and
impactful on the nose, with notes of white peach,
Mirabelle plum, rose petal, exotic orange, ruby
grapefruit peel. Crushed rock, wet minerals, and
jasmine flowers intermingle with lychee fruit,
wild strawberry, and white lily too. We could go
on (and on).
As one reviewer put it:
"Bold and beautiful, this is the rare wine that
has so many seemingly mutually exclusive
attributes, yet they all coexist in one
expression. Captivating."
As
this wine is ever-so-lightly sweet (10g/l) it is a
classic with Asian cuisine, anything sweet and
sour, Vegan
Thai Curry Vegetables (don't be afraid to
get spicy with the dish), and if you're feeling a
bit exotic, try this Somali dish: Suqaar
Digaag.
