Renegade Wines November 2020 Newsletter

Wow if it isn't here again, and so soon! We're talking about Thanksgiving weekend of course.
There are tons of options when pairing wine with your holiday dinner. We've narrowed it down to a few friendly selections below.

Paul Bara Grand Cru Brut Reserve (France, Champagne)
$58
Known as the Champagne house that inspired a generation of grower-producers. Fantastic quality here year after year.
Beautiful bubbles, hints of red berries sneak into the scents of brioche and Meyers lemon, bright and racy with tiny, energetic bubbles and a long finish leaving one the desire for more.

Veuve Fourny Premier Cru Grand Reserve Brut (France, Champagne)
$46.50

This is a tasty bottle of bubbles!
Bright and energetic with a touch ethereal in feel, especially on the mid-palate. Almond, chamomile, dried flowers and lemon are all nicely framed in the glass.
A treasure known as 'The Other Veuve'. Very Worthy!

J. Lassalle Premier Cru Brut Reserve Cachet d'Or (France, Champagne) $40
“Une femme, un esprit, un style” (one woman, one spirit, one style) may be the mantra for this Champagne house.
Chantal Decelle-Lassalle took over the reigns in the 80s from her father, and Chantal's daughter is now creating sensational Champagnes year after year.
Antonio Galloni says it well:
"Lassalle's NV Brut Premier Cachet d'Or is a good introduction to the house style. Lemon, flowers and savory herbs are all nicely articulated in the glass. I especially like the energy and sense of vibrancy here."
We do too, glass after glass.

2018 Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio (Italy, Colli Orientali del Friuli) $24
A Pinot Grigio that reaches new heights. This wine offers complex, rich and multi-layered aromas of orange blossom, daisy, white wisteria, apricot, peach, white melon and yellow peach.
A brilliant effort. You'll never think of Pinot Grigio in the same way again.

2018 Louis Michel Chablis Butteaux Vieilles Vignes (France, Burgundy, Chablis) $45
From a parcel of 65-year-old vines, this is a wine of wine of off-the-charts textural intensity and pure power. Apricot, orange peel, spice and honey add to the wine's decidedly exotic feel. A wonderful wine for the weekend.

2018 Ridge Chardonnay Estate (Santa Cruz Mountains) $58.50
This Charonnay from the Monte Bello vineyard is a vivid example of the wines created at this legendary winery.
This is a sensuous wine with beautiful notes of ripe apple, yellow plum, citrus blossom paired with honeysuckle and bright acidity.
The perfect paring? Steamed mussels with garlic crostinis. It's not always about the turkey.

2019 Jean-Claude Lapalu Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes (France, Burgundy)
$26

A succulent and very suave Gamay from one of the top winemakers in Beaujolais. A perfect pairing with Turkey dinner and all the fixings.

2018 Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee 1er Aux Brunlees Vieilles Vignes (France, Burgundy, Cotes de Nuits)
$240

An insane array of violet, plum, lavender, soy, Asian-style tea and red cherry aromas. Heads are spinning.
This followed by a beautiful richness and punch that young Pinot Noirs rarely have. Decant for a time and enjoy this breathtaking wine over the weekend.

2018 Chateau de Beaucastel (France, Southern Rhone, Chateauneuf-du-Pape)
$98

Say you're having turkey but also serving a roast, or lamb, or Porterhouse steak. This wine is for you.
Elegant yet powerful with bright intensity. Bright red berry fruit, silky tannins, this shows tremendous length with an underlying savoriness. Hard to stop at just one sip.

Bresca Dorada Mirto di Sardegna (Italy, Sardinia)
$42

Mirto is Sardinia's classic liqueur and digestivo. The Sardinian myrtle berries are hand-harvested in December, then infused into neutral grain spirit for several months. Wild honey is added as the sweetener. Spicy and sweet, with earthy herbal notes. A very distinctive, attractive, after dinner sipper that relaxes and invites beautiful dreams.

2016 Chateau Laribotte (France, Bordeaux, Sauternas)
$22 - 375ml

If you're having Foie Gras this weekend then this would be perfect.
However, if after a full-course holiday dinner you'd like something sweet with your apple, pumpkin, or mince pie, this is the dessert wine for you. This is a lighter style of Sauternes with bright acidity and a golden orange-marmalade/quince/apricot overtones. Delicious!

Taylor Fladgate Porto 20 Year Tawny (Portugal, Douro, Porto)
$58

Succulent and inviting. Goes with anything chocolate but please hold the cigars. You don't want to miss a beat with this one. Rich, with cinnamon spice, caramel, nutmeg and fig on the nose followed by bright cherry and lovely passion fruit with a finish that will be with you until morning.
