2014 April Newsletter: Value, Burgs, New Arrivals

Two of the Best Value Wines This Year

The 2007 Arnaldo-Caprai 'Anima Umbra' is a sincere & elegant wine. Bright ruby red, lovely plum & earth notes. 85% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo. This is old world wine at its best. And at $16/bottle it's one of the best red wine values out there.
-
Also in stock are his 2012 Grechetto ($16)
2007 Montefalco ($24)
70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% merlot
And his tremendous 2007 Collepiano ($55)
100% Sagrantino

One of the best finds this year. Our first taste brought about a craving for oysters. Then the wine opened up in the glass & we thought about ceviche and seared scallops. Finally we came around to the price and almost fainted. $9. That's Nine Dollars a bottle.
-
There's an enticing minerality paired with pear & apple. Aging the wine on its lees adds weight & character as does the barrel-fermenting of 10% of the wine. Produced within a stone's throw of the Atlantic, this wine is already a serious contender for Wine of the Year. And it's only April.
2012 Domaine de Bernier Val de Loire $9

Top-Notch Burgundy at a Realistic Price

First, where the heck is Givry? And why haven't I heard of this appellation? From Chassagne-Montrachet head South past Santenay, Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey, and you will arrive at Givry, elevated to premier cru status in 2008.
-
Now the wine: WOW. An 'everyday' pinot noir that out performs its pricetag. Soft lush juice, with just the right balance of elegance & weight. The perfect wine for grilled salmon, roast chicken or wild mushrooms.
2011 Domaine Masse Givry Clos de la Brulee 1er $26.50

You've heard of Domaine Romanee Conti, producer of perhaps the most celebrated Pinot Noir in the world. From the same owner/winemaker comes this wine: 100% Aligote. Don't laugh. It's utterly fantastic. Aubert de Villaine moved to Bouzeron in the 1970s and was determined to show the world how exceptional Aligote can be. He has succeeded. From vines of up to 90 years old, this wine has style. Rich, seductive, layered, with a long long finish.

This drinks more like a Chassagne-Montrachet!
